Gifts for stationery lovers

Shopping for a pen person, a planner person or a teacher? Here's how to find something they'll use and not just shelve.

Do a little recon

Stationery people are particular. Peek at their desk: gel or fountain pens? Dotted or lined? Big planner or tiny notebook? If you can't snoop, pick something consumable, like ink, sticky notes or a new notebook in a size they already use, or something experiential, like a lettering kit.

Ideas by personality

The planner devotee: an academic planner for July, washi tape and a sticker book.
The note-taker: a smooth pen gift set and a nice dotted journal.
The crafter: a hand lettering kit with brush pens and practice pads.
The letter writer: personalized stationery and a sheet of Forever stamps.
The teacher: fun pens, sticky notes and thank-you cards for their own students.

Gift-giving calendar

Stationery shines for birthdays and the winter holidays, but also for Teacher Appreciation Week in early May, graduation season in May and June, a back-to-school care package in August, and National Handwriting Day on January 23.

Still stuck? A pack of thank-you notes is always useful, especially after the holidays.
